CONDUCTOR'S RETREAT AT MEDOMAK July 4 - 22, 2012
The Conductors Retreat at Medomak has been working with Medomak Retreat Center over the past 15 years. This unique summer program offers a safe, non-competitive environment for both novice and veteran conductors to learn skills and techniques that will influence them throughout their musical lives. Founder and director, Kenneth Kiesler (director of orchestras and professor of conducting at the School of Music of the University of Michigan), also a Medomak Camp alumnus, shares with his students not only a love of music, but a deep appreciation for the New England landscape. At Medomak conductors, ranging in age from sixteen to sixty, have the ability to be successful at their art in front contemporaries but without the scrutiny of the public all the while under Kiesler's passionate analysis.
The newly renovated barn, on the Retreat Center property, has the charm of the old and the comfort of the new. Offering an open functional interior for the conductor's numerous skill sessions with a raised stage, loft and vestibule. The Barn is completely insulated which allows for temperature control and extraneous sound. The well lit space allows conductors and musicians alike the ability to easily read their music.
Each year the culmination of the retreat is a public concert highlighting the participants conducting skills as well as a large chorus of experienced singers. The conductors join a professional orchestra for a rare Washington, Maine performance at Medomak. The concert is free to the public. However, call ahead for time and directions.
