New England Fiber Arts Retreat

20091211064818.jpgJULY 29- AUGUST 4, 2012

REGISTRATION IS OPEN

Come join us for a week of fiber-filled fun in beautiful mid-coast Maine. This is your chance to get away and focus on all of those wonderful projects you just haven't had the time to tackle. Whether you knit, crochet, spin, felt, dye, or weave, or if you've always wanted to learn how, this is the place for you! Enjoy the company of fellow fiber enthusiasts while you spin by the fireplace or knit in rocking chairs on the porch of our lodge. Bring along a small project for a pontoon cruise around the pine-edged lake.

If you're looking to start a new project or purchase some Maine fiber products, you're in luck. Local vendors and artists will set up shop and sell their wares in our lodge. We are happy to provide space for participants to sell their own products to the group as well.

INSTRUCTORS & CLASSES

Under the patient guidance of lead instructor Bill Huntington, owner of Hope Spinnery, you will have the opportunity to learn from his classes in Fair Isle Knitting, Making and Cutting Steeks, Sampling Color Combinations, Chaotic Knitting, and one of his original hat designs.

Daniel Yuhas, obsessed knitter, teacher, and fiber artist, will be teaching a Lace 101 class along with a class on how to knit Bosnian Slipper Socks. You can find his online shop at Molting Yeti.

Dana Fadel, weaver extraordinaire, will be teaching classes in rigid-heddle weaving.

Rachel Bingham will be teaching classes in natural dyeing, needle felting, and nuno felting.

Casey Ryder, will be teaching tri-loom weaving, felted soap making, magic loop knitting, and wheel spinning.

Bristol Ivy will be instructing classes in Drop Spindle Spinning, Silk Hankie Mittens, an original cowl pattern. She will also be sharing a slide show of her trip to New Zealand!

FIBERY FIELD TRIPS

In addition to classes & workshops, we will be taking field trips to these local farms, and studios...

Wind-Powered Hope Spinnery, owned and operated by our very own Bill Huntington. Bill will take us on a tour of the spinnery and then we'll have a chance to check out his studio space and wonderful wind-spun yarns!

Nanne Kennedy is the owner of Medowcroft Farm in Washington, Maine and creator of SEACOLORS, a line of yarn that is dyed naturally in solar bins using sea water. Nan will take us on a tour of her farm for an "on the hoof" experience--a chance to see where all fiber arts begin...on the animal!

We will also be visiting Katharine Cobey, a world renowned fiber artist, at her studio in Cushing, Maine. Listen as she describes her experiences and shares techniques she uses to create her one of a kind pieces.

"What was selected as an extended family trip for my parents 50th anniversary turned out extreamly well. It is hard to find a spot to engage my 75 year old father as my 5 year old nephew, but it happened here. It is the natural , green beauty and quiet lack of commercialism that struck me here. Don't feel you have to take in all the activities; explore. Look inside yourself, away from work and the world, and find a piece of your personal soul that you forgot or didn't know was there."
